Search Efforts for Missing Belfast Man Continue in Spain

Search efforts to locate John Hardy, also known as John George, have entered their third week following his disappearance in Spain. The 37-year-old west Belfast man was last in contact with his family on December 14, after travelling from Alicante to Benidorm.

John’s father, Billy George, who travelled to Spain to aid the search, expressed his belief that his son is no longer alive. Despite this, the family remains determined to find answers.

Fresh Appeals for Information

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) issued a renewed public appeal on Friday, urging anyone with information about John’s disappearance to come forward. They are assisting Spanish authorities in the ongoing investigation.

Search Team Wraps Up Initial Mission

K9 Search and Rescue NI, a volunteer canine search team from Northern Ireland, chaired by the sister of missing woman Lisa Dorrian, has been assisting in Spain since New Year’s Day. However, the team concluded its current mission on Sunday without finding any trace of John.

Speaking about the search, team leader Ryan Gray acknowledged the challenges faced during the operation. “We’ve searched for missing people in England and Scotland before, but this is the first time we’ve handled a case outside the UK,” Gray said.

The search involved combing through diverse and challenging terrain, including scrubland, urban areas, and waterways, in temperatures reaching 17 to 18 degrees Celsius. Despite covering extensive areas, the team found no evidence related to John’s whereabouts.

Support from Friends and Family

John’s family and friends remain in Spain, continuing their search efforts. “They’re determined to keep looking for John,” said Mr. Gray.

Although the K9 team has returned to Northern Ireland, Gray assured the family of their continued support. “We don’t want to leave, but we will return if the family requests our assistance,” he said.

Logistical Challenges of the Search

The search effort presented logistical hurdles, including coordinating team members’ schedules and arranging transportation for the team’s recovery dog. Gray highlighted the complexities but emphasised their readiness to assist wherever needed.

As the search for John Hardy/George continues, his family and friends are appealing for any information that could bring them closer to finding him.
