Getting it Right For You With A NIHE Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships in Northern Ireland Housing Executive have given hundreds of people the opportunity to launch a new career, develop their skills and build their expertise.

During Northern Ireland Apprenticeship Week, the organisation is encouraging people of all ages, backgrounds and genders to consider an apprenticeship as the next step on their career journey.

Over the last ten years, the Housing Executive has recruited more than 300 apprentices and graduates across a number of roles including customer support, patch management, housings advisor, neighbourhood officer, housing administration, plumbing, joinery, electrics, IT, project management and quantity surveying.

In 2024, 60 entry-level staff joined the organisation with a further 101 apprentices employed by contractors working on Housing Executive projects. As a result, the Housing Executive recently exceeded its three-year target of 120 apprentices earlier than expected.

Sophie Irwin, Head of Learning and Organisational Development in the Housing Executive said: “As an organisation with gold Investors in People status we are truly invested in developing a skilled workforce that enhances our service delivery now and in the future. Creating opportunities and supporting apprentices and graduates of all ages to build skills and confidence with tailored training that is directly relevant to the needs of the sector is the perfect way to do this”

“Apprentices play a vital role in the Housing Executive. They bring diverse experiences, enthusiasm and innovation. They also have the opportunity to significantly impact the lives of our tenants, customers and communities as well as local businesses and the economy.”

Just one example of this is the Housing Apprenticeship programme which was launched in 2023. Eighteen apprentices are currently taking part in the Northern Ireland Level 3 Apprenticeship in Housing Practice, gaining qualifications, knowledge and expertise to address skills gaps identified in the housing sector. These apprenticeships ensure that the Housing Executive will continue to meet the evolving needs of local communities across Northern Ireland.

Sophie continued: “There has never been a better time to consider an apprenticeship with us. We plan to offer a range of apprenticeships during 2025.

Anyone who joins our apprenticeship programmes will have the opportunity to attain recognised qualifications whilst earning a competitive salary, and have the opportunity to access a wide range of career development options.

“In the coming months, we will announce details of our latest opportunities.”
